Mobile first and e-commerce as the new lifestyle
Innovation continues to drive the Philippine online retail industry as newer and more creative ways of shopping arise.

According to a 2019 report by the Malaysia-based iPrice group, the Philippines is one of four Southeast Asian countries slowly shifting focus to mobile apps, with web traffic in the country having decreased by 29 percent.

Shopee and Lazada remain two of the top online retail platforms, not just in the Philippines but throughout Southeast Asia based on the iPrice study. They are also the top two mobile e-commerce shopping apps with the highest monthly active users and total downloads in the region.

In separate interviews with The Manila Times, representatives of Shopee and Lazada talked about current trends in the online retail trade.

Lazada sees “e-payment solutions and social commerce” as rising trends. Shopee observed that besides seeing more Filipinos turn to e-commerce, shopping tastes for men and women

were converging. Shopee also observed that brick and mortar retailers were capitalizing on the rise of the online retail trade by going digital.

“More major retailers are seen to embrace digital transformation to boost consumer outreach and enhance consumer engagement amid the e-commerce boom [including] renowned retail brands such as P&G, Unilever and SM Store,” noted Shopee Philippines Associate Director Martin Yu.

Lazada Chief Executive Officer Ray Alimurung said “consumers are [also] seeking a lot more integration between different types of experiences as they are always multi-tasking – experiences which are functional, entertaining and social all at the same time.”

In this regard, Lazada and Shopee are enhancing consumer shopping experience with value-added features that go beyond clicking and buying.

Lazada public relations head Anvey Factora pointed out that they were on their way in becoming a lifestyle destination by introducing “shoppertainment” to uplift the shopper experience through livestream programs such as their livestream game show “Guess It” that has attracted thousands of followers.

According to Yu, Shopee also took a similar approach launching Shopee Live. He added that they had also launched in-app games such as Shopee Shake, Shopee Quiz and Shopee Slice to “better engage users and give them more chances to win exciting prizes.”

PayMaya, meanwhile, is now “the largest online acquirer for Philippine e-commerce, enabling companies to accept all kinds of payments, whether it be credit, debit, prepaid,

or e-wallet such as PayMaya or WeChat Pay — in just one platform,” according to its president, Shailesh Baidwan.

“While we prefer not to cite specific data right now on PayMaya usage, we can say that the ease of creating a PayMaya account, the convenience and security of online transactions, as well as the attractive promotions and cashbacks offered are the main reasons why consumers are preferring the use of electronic payments for their purchases,” Baidwan explained further.

The PayMaya executive said they were introducing innovations as part of the company’s goal “to make PayMaya the most convenient way for customers to pay and transact in the Philippines — better than any other form of payment including cash.”
