Under-eye circles are a common concern for many people.
In general, dark shadows are a result of genetics, fatigue, diet, pigmentation, seasonal allergies, or a combination of several factors.
So, what is the first step to tackling under-eye circles? Emma Brown, Time Bomb skincare expert and celebrity facialist, is adamant that it’s important to use sunscreen each day.
“If dark circles are an issue for you, then it’s critical to wear sunscreen every single day, rain or shine!” she told us. “A broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 will protect your skin from the UVA and UVB rays which will make the pigmentation worse.”
While lack of sleep doesn’t necessarily cause under-eye circles, it can make them appear worse. To minimise the circles or puffiness, Emma advises keeping a teaspoon in the fridge overnight and using it in the morning to apply eye cream.
“Move the spoon from the inside corner of the nose outwards towards the outside of your brows. The combination of the cold temperature and movement will instantly de-puff and aid lymphatic drainage,” the beauty expert explained.
In addition, a quality eye cream can make a difference to under-eye circles. Look for a product which contains ingredients such as peptides and hyaluronic acid as they will plump the delicate area.
“Liquorice extract is another fantastic ingredient to look for in an eye cream as it works to reduce the formation of pigment in the skin,” shared Emma, noting that Time Bomb’s Smart Balm Eye Cream contains both peptides and liquorice extract, as well as centella to boost microcirculation, and borage oil to steep the skin in moisture.
Other eye creams which contain liquorice extract include BeautyBio’s The Beholder Lifting Eye + Lid Cream, Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare’s Hyaluronic Marine Dew It All Eye Gel, and Aveda’s Botanical Kinetics Energizing Eye Creme.
“Be careful not to go overboard with lotions and potions to try and remedy the issue quickly, as overloading the eye area with too much product can cause sensitivity and puffiness,” she added.
